Setting the record straight about hemp, haircare's hottest and most controversial new ingredient.
"Hemp is not marijuana and it's not a drug," reports Kimberlee Mitchell, director of public relations for Alterna, manufacturers of a hemp seed oil-based haircare line based in Los Angeles, California. "Hemp and marijuana are both from the cannabis family, but they are two very different plants."
Mitchell explains industrial hemp, used to create a variety of goods, from clothing to car parts and now shampoos and bodycare, is THC (drug) free-the levels are so low, you could smoke a bushel of the stuff and not get high.
"Hemp seed oil is one of the richest sources of essential fatty acids and essential amino acids, which are vital nutrients responsible for strong, healthy keratin formation," Mitchell explains. "The oil helps maintain hair's strength, health and natural appearance."
