Short & Sweet Nails

Nails this spring are delicate and decidedly feminine.

The freshest tips are short, sexy and meticulously groomed, then left lightly buffed for a natural shine, or painted with sweet-enough-to-eat pastel polishes.

"In fashion, we're seeing a lot of multi-layering, which creates a new, diaphanous look," explains Jan Arnold, president of Creative Nail Design in Vista, California. "Fabric colours are light with a touch of iridescence. Softly shaped nails, with delicate yet lighthearted colours, are the perfect accessory."

Shimmering pink, lilac, dusty rose and white make this season's list of essential shades. Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, executive vice-president and artistic director for OPI Products in North Hollywood, California, says while dark nails are dramatic, this spring it's time to lighten up.

"These colours embody a sense of freedom, inspired by the feeling we get during those first few days of spring," Weiss-Fischmann says. "Think bright and sunny."

If you find pastels are too prissy, rich metallic shades also work this spring. Inge Hatheway, president of LCN Canada in Edmonton, Alberta, says warm gold, bronze and copper polishes finish nails with a jolt of colour and look fabulous paired with this season's sun-kissed makeup.

When it comes to length, short, squovals have replaced last season's severely pointed talons. Debra Springham, co-owner of Star Nail Canada in Edmonton, Alberta, says women want active, natural-looking lengths, explaining, "Anything severely artificial looking is definitely out."
