About Face

Facial hair can enhance faultless features, or hide flawed ones.

Actor Joseph Fiennes, star of the Academy Award nominated film Shakespeare in Love, is Hollywood's celebrity dreamiest leading man. With his bedroom eyes and scruffy five o'clock shadow, Fiennes burns up the screen. But off camera, sans stubble, he is instantly transformed from smoldering sex symbol to whole some boy next door.

"Facial hair adds distinction," says Tony Valvano, a stylist at Felice Valvano Hairstyling in St. Catherines, Ontario. "It can enhance facial features and makes men feel more trendy."

Valvano says goatees continue to be extremely popular, but he also suggests experimenting with more creative, progressive looks a dash of colour for a serious edge. Regardless of the look, the key is to keep hair neat and tidy.

"When facial hair gets too long, it loses appeal," Valvano says. "Use a clipper to clean up beards, and closely trim stubble to a one-week length-anything more looks too messy."
